Spring Espalier: Pruning & Maintenance Techniques • Saturday, June 15 • 11a-1p

from $40.00

Join us in the HOEC Community Orchard for this hands-on workshop to learn tips, tricks, and techniques related to pruning your espaliered fruit trees in order maintain solid structure and maximize harvest.

Created in the Middle Ages as a way to grow fruit inside the safety of castle walls, the “espalier” method of training and pruning trees into a form that will grow flat against a wall or a free-standing trellis is now commonly utilized as a beautiful way to grow and display fruit in creative gardens or small spaces.

While there is a slight learning curve to managing espaliered trees, there are advantages to mastering these forms too! Benefits include: efficient use of small or irregular spaces, ease of access for management and harvest, increased penetration of sunlight for maximized fruit ripening and pest and disease prevention, heat capture from nearby walls in winter frost, and of course…aesthetics!
