HOEC seeks Vice President who is organized, collaborative, and committed our Orchard community and organizational health.

About The Home Orchard Education Center:

HOEC is a 501(c)3 non-profit centered around the stewardship of an established educational community orchard, located in Clackamas County, Oregon.

The HOEC Mission is: To celebrate and explore horticultural education, provide equitable community access to healthy food, and support systems that promote intergenerational community connection.


About the Position:

The Vice President is, first and foremost, responsible for the effective functioning of the board in its role of governing the organization. The Vice President’s role is to assist the President with the execution of their duties.  In the absence of the President, the Vice President shall perform the duties of the President, and is designated successor to the President. The Vice President serves as the Committee Chair for the External Affairs Committee.


What Does The HOEC Board Of Directors Do?

The role of the HOEC Board is to ensure the organization works towards and adheres to its stated purpose and mission, to make decisions in the best interest of the HOEC, and to ensure that applicable laws and regulations are being followed. This means that board members attend board meetings, brainstorm and share ideas with each other, support and work with the Executive Director, and vote on important issues. Titled board members also perform tasks related to their specific title, such as note taking, record keeping, running reports, subcommittee oversight, leading meetings, etc.

It is important to know that the HOEC board is a working and fundraising board. Being a part of a working board means that board members do fulfill basic governing duties, but also have some additional responsibilities related to the essential functioning of the organization, like helping to create new policies, fundraising, and serving on a subcommittee.

Service on the HOEC Board of Directors is voluntary. No payment or other type of compensation is offered other than experience working on a nonprofit board and the knowledge that you are doing good for your community!


Primary Duties:

The Vice President in consultation with the President, will decide how best to share and assign the following responsibilities:

Board Meetings: 

  • Organize and preside over board and other association meetings, using Robert’s Rules of Order, guiding them in a positive and professional manner and ensuring all pertinent topics and concerns are addressed.  

  • Work closely with the executive director to prepare the agenda for monthly board meetings in consultation with the board secretary and treasurer. 

Communication: 

  • Ensure that Board and other community members are given all of the information they need to make informed decisions before they vote. 

  • Relay details from meetings, and report the results of voting & evaluations to applicable parties clearly and in a timely fashion.

Approving Strategy: 

  • Ensure all plans and decisions made by the board are in alignment with the organization’s mission and value statements. 

  • Sign documents and contracts as approved by the board. 

Delegation: 

  • Distribute tasks & responsibilities related to board decisions and projects to applicable committee members. 

  • Check the task tracker and follow up to ensure the work gets done.

  • Encourage board participation in strategic planning and organizational fundraising events. 

Support a Strong and Accountable Board: 

  • Monitor board dynamics; supporting, guiding, and coaching fellow board members when needed.

  • Request & encourage input and opinions from the board and other applicable participants to demonstrate teamwork and maintain a diverse variety of input. 

  • Ensure all board members follow organizational rules and work with the ED to address as needed. 

  • Create and oversee the yearly evaluation of the Executive Director. 

  • Work with the board to hire or replace staff as applicable.

  • Ensure that requests made of the Board of Directors, or relevant to the governance of the Association, are reported, recorded, and responded to in a timely manner.

  • Act as a support and resource for the executive director on organizational issues as needed.

Organizational Growth:

  • Actively participate in board succession planning (recruitment, nominations and orientation).

  • Actively seek out funding opportunities. 

  • Actively seek out opportunities for personal and professional growth.

  • Actively seek out opportunities for enhanced community connection.

Privileges

  • Has one vote regarding all board decisions.

  • May sign checks.

  • May make bank deposits.
