Volunteer Spotlight: Ray

Spotlighting dedicated volunteers whose time and care help the community orchard grow and flourish.

How long have you been volunteering at HOEC?

RAY: I started last summer (2024) but have been coming regularly since January.

What is your favorite part about volunteering?

RAY: Learning and community! There are so many knowledgeable people that volunteer, it’s always nice to share conversation and pick up tips for things I can do at home.

What’s your favorite fruit?

RAY: Not a fair question - most anything but I’d include pears, figs, berries, grapes, oranges, apples, persimmons…

What's your favorite way to eat an apple or pear?

RAY: Other than fresh, I like cobblers or crisps.

What are your favorite volunteer tasks?

RAY: I’m still learning, I’m getting the hang of pruning trees and look forward to spring and then harvest time. But really, as long as I’m outside, I’m happy doing just about anything.

What kinds of skills have you learned volunteering at the HOEC Community Orchard?

RAY: To date, just some pruning, a little grafting,

Is there anything else you would like to share?

RAY: This is such a fun place to be, I initially came just to learn about orchard management but the atmosphere of fun, kind and helpful people is such a bonus. I retired just over a year ago and am thrilled to be able to get out during the week to be a part of this group.
